Celebrating Women Like Magreth

Convoy began its Women’s Empowerment program in 2010, driven by a desire to uplift women, remind them of their value, and support them with opportunities to provide for themselves and their families. The goal is to help women break the cycle of poverty and empower them to advocate for themselves — creating opportunities that endure for generations.

Tanzania is a strong example of empowerment in action. Convoy of Hope has worked in Tanzania for more than a decade — empowering more than 9,500 women and girls there in 2024 alone. Through the Women’s Empowerment program, women have learned how to break the cycle of poverty, start and grow their own businesses, and give back to their communities. Women can take part in classes focused on financial literacy, vocational training, early childhood care, and more.

Magreth is a widow and mother of seven in Tanzania. Before partnering with Convoy of Hope, she made traditional Maasai jewellery and crafts, selling them locally. This was her only source of income. However, Magreth didn’t have enough capital to buy the supplies she needed to meet market demand. As a result, she didn’t have the income to provide food and basic necessities for her family.

Convoy of Hope provided seed capital, training, and craft-making materials to help support Magreth’s business. Since joining Convoy’s program, she has continued to make Maasai jewellery — now fulfilling orders from multiple vendors. She has also built her own home and homes for her sons, rents land to grow vegetables, and has opened a savings account.

With Convoy’s support, Magreth can now provide enough meals for her family. She has even started other ventures, such as raising cows and chickens, as well as vegetable farming. Her business has grown to the point where she’s been able to provide her two daughters with startup capital for their own businesses.

Convoy of Hope also empowers women through its Agriculture initiative. Convoy’s agriculture specialists teach farming methods that promote sustainable practices.

Convoy of Hope celebrates women like Magreth every day as they create lasting change for generations of women around the world.
